Breast Pump Resources
I am often asked for my professional recommendations regarding breast pumps for purchase and rental. Choosing the right pump is highly dependent on your personal feeding plan and goals, and I strongly recommend a prenatal consultation to discuss your specific needs, especially proper flange fitting, which is crucial for comfort and efficacy.
Based on my opinion and experience, here are my current recommendations for both hospital-grade pumps and more portable options:
Recommended Hospital-Grade Pumps (for Purchase)
These pumps are ideal for establishing or significantly increasing milk supply due to their stronger, more efficient suction.
-
Ameda Mya Joy Plus: In my experience, this is the best and most portable hospital-grade pump for the best price.
-
Spectra S1: This is an excellent option, now available in Canada on Walmart.ca (though currently may be out of stock) and coming soon to Amazon.
-
Medela Sonata: A reliable option (bottle setup, NOT the wearable cups).
-
Medela Freestyle: Another strong choice (bottle setup, NOT the wearable cups).

Wearable Pump Options (for Convenience)
Please note: Wearable pumps are generally only recommended for individuals who are pumping once in a while and have a well-established milk supply (after approximately 10-12 weeks postpartum). They are not typically strong enough to establish or aggressively increase a low supply. These are NOT recommended for use when your baby is not latching, or having difficulty latching or your plan is to exclusively pump long term.
-
Eufy S1: Comes with a better variety of smaller flange sizes.
-
Willow Go: A popular, highly portable option (note: it is quite pricey).
-
A note on newer "hospital-grade" wearables: Medela has released a wearable pump stating "hospital grade," but it only includes two flange settings, which may not fit properly. Third-party flange inserts are known to reduce suction, and this option is also very expensive.

Hospital-Grade Pump Rentals (Barrie Area)
Renting a true hospital-grade pump can be a fantastic option, especially in the early weeks when you are working to establish your supply.

The optimal way to determine the correct breast pump and ensure proper flange sizing is by booking a consultation with a lactation consultant. I highly recommend scheduling this ideally during your prenatal period or as soon as possible postpartum, as the best pump choice depends entirely on how pumping integrates into your overall feeding plan.
